Holy Mackrel Batmite, That's A Big Sick You Have!

Check out the normal board dwarfed by this monster. It is capable of taking 50 surfers on it's back.

From Surfer Magazine Online.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The world’s largest surfboard will make its world record-breaking attempt for number of riders on one board at noon on Friday, July 29 during the Bank of the West Beach Games at the Huntington Beach Pier. The board is currently on public display in the 12-acre Beach Games venue.

The 40 foot behemoth was built by Australian Nev Hyman and weighs more than 1200 pounds. It was successfully ridden into the record books on Australia’s Gold Coast in March with 47 surfers aboard. The Big Board measures 10 feet wide and 12 inches thick. Due to its weight, 20 to 30 adults are required to manhandle the one-of-a-kind giant. The board is comprised of nearly a half ton of foam, 240 yards of 10 ounce fiberglass and 80 gallons of resin. More...

Bodysurfing, No Stick Required! Surf Pic.

Swimming is a my favorite physical sport, so it's great that I can surf with just my body.

What's holding you back? Jump in and have some fun!

Caution! Wetsuit may be required. I've got to move to a warmer climate.

sidenote: For the European readership. Even though San Francisco is at latitude 37 46 00 N, roughly the same as Marsala, Sicily or Cartagena, Spain, the ocean is cold. The California current (surface current) brings water down from Alaska. Brrrrr.

Derek Ho Makes It Look Easy. Surfing.

Here is Derek Ho riding a wave in the Air Tahiti Nui/Von Zipper trials at the treacherous Teahupoo. He and 79 other big wave surfers are trying to land one of two wildcards in the Billabong Pro Tahiti contest which begins May 5th and runs until the 17th.

Here is what Surfline has to say about Teahupoo:
"This isn't your father's perfect wave, and unless seeing your next birthday doesn't rank on your list of priorities, it isn't yours either. Tahiti's Teahupoo (pronounced cho-pu) is essentially a glorified closeout -- a hideous, deadly barrel promising a heap of trouble for even the most capable of surfers. In recent years, professional contests and high-profile tow-ins have bombarded us with images of her seemingly flawless barrels, but no other surf spot extracts a higher toll than Teahupoo, the heaviest wave in the world."

Can you say bamboo? Surfing

Oz really is a center of innovation and design. Look what they are doing with surfboards. Made from bamboo this stick is 15% lighter than normal, with more control and speed in turns, that resists denting. It's made with two third less toxic chemicals and has twice the strength of fibreglass and six times steel. The primary strength of the board is stored in the skin (instead of the stringer) which allows for rail to rail flex, with the weight distributed away from the center of the board.

Awesome, a board made from grass.

I have got to figure out the how to technique for building this board. I can see it's applications used on kayaks and waveskis.
