When going out into the ocean, I suggest that you prepare for anything and everthing that can go wrong. You can't always count on someone coming to your rescue.
note: Every sailor in the U.S. Navy is trained in firefighting, damage control and water survival. (Exp: No PFD, no big deal. Sailors learn how to turn their shirts or pants into flotation devices.)

President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the
United States of American was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday the Japanese government also launched as attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.
And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. . .

Retired Navy Lt. John W. Finn, the oldest Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, died Thursday at his Southern California ranch. He was 100.
Lt. Finn enlisted in the Navy just before his 17th birthday and went on to become the first man to receive the nation's highest military award for heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, according to a Navy statement.
He was the oldest of 97 Medal of Honor recipients still living.
Despite head wounds and other injuries, Lt. Finn, the chief of ordnance for an air squadron, continuously fired a .50-caliber machine gun from an exposed position as bullets and bombs pounded the Naval Air Station at Kaneohe Bay in Oahu. He then supervised the rearming of returning American planes. Continues at SF Gate.

Stealthy, fast and highly maneuverable, this unmanned vessel identifies its targets through an electro-optical system and has day and night strike capabilities. Highly autonomous and remotely controlled, the PROTECTOR can successfully operate with general guidance from a commander and operator.
The PROTECTOR's anti-terror mission module payload includes sensors and weapon systems. The search radar and the Toplite electro-optical (EO) pod enable detection, identification and targeting operations.
The weapon systems are based on RAFAEL's Typhoon remote-controlled, stabilized weapon station, capable of operating various small caliber guns. The highly accurate, stabilized weapon station has excellent hit-and-kill probability.
The PROTECTOR is mission reconfigurable through its plug-and-play design, allowing utilization of various mission modules, such as force protection anti-terror surveillance and reconnaissance, mine warfare and electronic warfare.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt: Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the
United States of American was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with
its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after
Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador
to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American
message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained
no threat or hint of war or armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned
many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive
the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret
to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on
the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday the Japanese government also launched as attack against Malaya.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.
And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and
today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand
the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will
our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. . .
